confined to coniferous forests above 9,000 feet.
Grand Mesa Penstemon (Penstemon mensarumj, Federal category 2 species; until recently was known to
occur in this area only on the north side of the North Fork of the Gunnison River in the Hawksnest
drainage. During July, 1994, it's presence was documented at eight locations on the review area by
Robert Dorn, of Mountain West Environmental Services. From his report to the Forest Service he wrote,
'Above 7800 feet it was so abundant that it was difficult to find a relatively flat site 125 feet by 125
feet that did no have the plant. The plants were abundant along most of the roads and trails as well as
in natural openings of the oak-serviceberry-chokecherry habitat which covers thousands of acres in the
vicinity, most of which has difficult access. Past exploratory drilling has actually helped the plants by
providing openings for them to colonize."
The following list of listed, proposed, or candidate species have the potential to occur in the region, and
on the review area, but have not been found on the review area:
Black-footed Ferret (Musts/e nigripes) Endangered
Ferruginous Hewk (Bufeo regalisl Category-2
Long-Billed Curlew (Numanius emericanusl Category-2
Northern Goshawk (Accipiter genrilis) Category-2
Southwest Willow Flycatc her (Epidomax (rai/ii ex(imus) Category-1
White-Faced Ibis (Plegedis chihrl Category-2
Whooping Crane (GrusAmericanal Endangered
Adobe Desert Parsley (Lomafium concinnum) Category-2
Boreal toed (Bufo boreesl Category-2
Cley-Loving Buckwheat (Eriogonum pe/inophi/um) Endangered
Columbian Sherpteiled Grouse (Tympenuchus phesiane//us) Category-2
Roundtail chub (Gila robusfel Category-2
Flannalmouth sucker (Catostomus letipinnisl Category-2
Category 1 and 2 species are candidates for listing as threatened or endangered under the
Endangered Species Act; information is currently not sufficient to support listing.
Proposed species are those which have been formally proposed to be listed as threatened or
endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
