-64-
5. Withdrawal of Water from the North Fork of the Gunnison for Mine Use
Three mining operations withdraw or will withdraw water from the North Fork fior
mine use. The Mt. Gunnison operation proposes to withdraw Z50 acre feet/year
for its use. Western Slope Carbon withdraws approximately 45 acre feet/year
for its water needs. The Somerset mine has not reported how much water it uses,
but presumably is about the same amount as Mt. Gunnison. In combination this
usage amounts to about 1/1000 of the annual yield of the North Fork of the
Gunnison, and would be done in compliance with State water law.
The following stipulation is required by the Division so as to insure that the
applicant analyzes and uses the data gathered under requirements put forth in
previous stipulations:
STIPULATION NO. .G'
THE PERMITTEE WILL SUBMIT TO THE DIVISION AN ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT. THIS
REPORT SHALL INCLUDE AN ANALYSIS OF ALL HYDROLOGIC DATA GATHERED DURING THE
YEAR, AN ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACTS OF MINING DURING THE YEAR, AND AN ASSESSMENT
OF THE PROJECTED IMPACTS OF MINING IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR. THIS REPORT SHALL
ASSESS THE IMPACTS OF MINING ON THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF WATER IN SURFACE
STREAMS, SPRINGS, GROUND WATER AQUIFERS, MINE INFLOW,AND MINE DISCHARGES.
Cumulative Hydrologic Effects - Finding
An assessment of the probable hydrologic consequences of the proposed mining `
operation and an assessment of the probable cumulative impact of aII anticipated
mining in the area on the hydrologic balance have been made. With the hydrologic
stipulations included in this findings document, the proposed operation has been
found to be designed to prevent material damage to the hydrologic balance outside
the permit area.
