Year 1985 was
an unusual event.
7.6.1 Piceance Site
Plant communities occurring at the Piceance Site include the Sagebrush Association,
Grassland Association, Pinyon-Juniper Association, Chained Pinyon-Juniper
Association, Barren/Rock Outcrop Association, and Riparian Vegetation, as
classified by the BLM (BLM 1994). These vegetation types have been described by the
BLM as follows (BLM 1982, BLM 1994); the names of the corresponding vegetation
types, as classified by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service and used by the BLM in the
BLM Sodium Leases FEA, are shown in parentheses.
Pinyon-Juniper Association (Foothills Pinyon-JuniTerl
The Pinyon-Juniper Association consists of pinyon pine and Utah juniper
woodlands with an understory of Indian ricegrass, bluebunch wheatgrass, galleta,
and needlegrass. Shrubs include mountain mahogany, antelope bitterbrush, and
Utah serviceberry. Overstory varies from open to closed woodland, and understory
shrub and grass-forb productivity generally varies inversely with overstory closure.
This vegetation type apparently has a competitive advantage over other vegetation
types and is the climax association on xeric ridgetops with shallow soils.
•
American Soda, L.L.P. 7-31
Commercial Mine Plan
August 18, 1998
