• (BLM 1982). Most of the annual precipitation cycles through soil-water storage and
evapotranspiration. Actual evapotranspiration is less than or equal to the annual
precipitation of 12.9 inches.
Three surface water gaging stations located along Piceance Creek are maintained by
the USGS: Piceance Creek below Rio Blanco (09306007); below Ryan Gulch
(09306200); and at the White River confluence (09306222). The average stream flow
at the Piceance Creek station below Ryan Gulch was approximately 19 cubic feet per
second (cfs) from 1964 to 1979. Flow from Piceance Creek entering the White River
averaged 26 cfs for 11 years of record.
Very little peak flow data exist for ephemeral streams in the region. It is estimated
that drainages of less than 5 square miles may experience 100-year peak flows
exceeding 30 cfs per square mile. For drainages greater than 5 square miles, peak
flows with recurrence frequency of 100 years or less are estimated not to exceed 10 cfs
per square mile.
Parachute Creek Watershed
The lower third of the project area is located in the Parachute Creek watershed,
which covers approximately 200 square miles and flows into the Colorado River
south of the town of Parachute, Colorado. Six USGS surface water gaging stations
• have historically been operable in the Parachute Creek watershed (Table 7-1).
Peak flow data for the Parachute Creek station at Parachute, which is the most
downstream station in the Parachute Creek drainage basin, indicate flows as high as
830 cfs. Average stream flow at the Parachute Creek station at Parachute was 30.9 cfs
from 1970 to 1983 (ACOE 1985).
Table 7-1 Parachute Creek USGS Gaging Stations,
USGS Station Name Station ID Period of Record
Parachute Creek at Parachute 09093500 1921 - 1982
Parachute Creek near Parachute 09093000 1948 - 1986
West Fork Parachute Creek near Parachute 09092800 1957 - 1962
East Middle Fork Parachute Creek near Rio Blanco 09092850 1976 - 1983
East Fork Parachute Creek near Rulison 09092970 1976 - 1983
East Fork Parachute Creek near Anvil Points 09092960 1976 - 1983
Period of record for some stations has intervals of missing data.
