The critics] value of the t statistic for 90% confidence, one-tailed test, with 20 degrees
of freedom is 1.325. Since the calculated t value is less than the critical value, the
original hypothesis (I-Io: µs1e„ t > 0.9µnference area) is not rejected. The statistical
conclusion is that the Area I as a whole, if subjected to the reference azea cover
standard, meets the revegetation success criterion for cover at this time. Area 1 has
live aerial vegetation cover equal to or greater than 90% of the 22.67% Upland
Sagebrush Reference Area aerial vegetation cover with 90% statistical confidence.
Based on vegetative cover, Area 1 as a whole qualifies at this time for Phase II Bond
Release. ~c- , .. • ,~._ ~ ~.._. ~~ .~~~-.. .w ,~~., ,...
~ Approximately 22 acres within Area 1 were remined and have a revegetation cover
standard established by the requirements of Rule 4.15.10. This standard requires that
":,~~ ~~9%' ground cover (live vegetation coyer and litter) be established to demonstrate
. successful revegetation. The mean ground cover in the 4.15.10 areas (1981, 1984, and
1990 revegetation) was 45.14%. The 1993 ground cover value is greater than the
revegetation standard. Therefore, these areas within Area 1 quality for Phase II bond
release based on the revegetation cover standard established under Rule 4.15.10.
Excluding the subareas which were remined and consequently must meet a numerical
' standard, there remain subareas within Area 1 which require statistical comparison with
reference area cover to establish eligibility for Phase II bond release.
The hypotheses to be tested for Area 1 subareas (1988 and 1978 revegetation) where
Rule 4.15.8 revegetation standards apply are:
Ho ~ /!area t > 0.9µteferencn area
Ha ~ l~area t ~ 0.9l~reference area
' The test statistic to be employed is the one-tailed t-test (Zar, 1974). The equation for
the test is as follows:
t = abs value[Xreference area - Xarea 1~
' Sxl-x2
where:
Xbaz= sample mean
I S =sample standard deviation
n =number of samples
Szp = (v2tS2t+v'-ZS22)( v2t+v22 pooled variance
Sxt-x2= sgrt[SZP(nt+n2~ntnZp standard error of the difference between the
I means
13
