III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OFNA~URALRESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHEITON, Director
Jl,ly ~, t9a~
Mr. Bob Sherman
The Rockcastle Company
C/0 Mark Korb
P. 0. Box 469
Fort Collins, Colorado 80522
Re: Grazing Plan - Grassy Gap t4ine - File No. C-81-039
Dear Mr, Sherman:
The Division has received the information you submitted in order to obtain
permission to graze sheep at the Grassy Gap mine. As submitted, the
information does not contain adequate detail to be considered a grazing plan.
However, as you are not proposing to actively graze the area, a full plan is
not required at this time.
Rule 4.15.5 requires that grazing be managed to promote the post-mining land
use and not be allowed to interfere vegetation sampling. Therefore, as long
as the infrequent grazing which occurs does not interfere with the potential
of the reclaimed areas to support the post-mining land use, the operation
would be in compliance with this rule. Tf however the area was severely
overgrazed or otherwise damaged, the Rockcastle Company could be subject to
enforcement action.
It should be noted that the Division does encourage grazing on reclaimed
areas to provide evidence that the post-mining land use can be supported.
Grazing should occur in the 8th and 9th years, and earlier if possible. Prior
to actively grazing the area, a complete grazing plan should be submitted to
the Division. This plan would include: the carrying capacity of the area
(AUM's), the number of animals to be grazed, percent utilization of the stand,
and a schedule of animal rotation to different areas. The Rockcastle Company
may submit this type of plan as soon as grazing of the property is considered
to be prudent.
If you have any questions, please ca17.
Sincerely,
~~ y -,-, ~
Jeffrey H.
