Hernandez, Dan III IIIIIIIIIIIII III

From: Gorham, Kent
Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2002 10:10 AM
To: Pineda, Loretta
Cc: Berry, David; Hernandez, Dan; Long, Mike
Subject: Media Contact
Late yesterday afternoon, Katie ? of the Trinidad Plus returned my message regarding her inquiry about the Lorencito
Canyon mine.
She indicated that Ron Leef (landowner) told her that when we were in Trinidad last week, we said something about a
violation regarding a certified blaster. I explained to her the facts of the violation (cessation order). She asked if it was
"remedied" and I told her what steps the mine took to abate the cessation order. She also asked about blasting after
sunset and I told her that issue is being reviewed at this time. She asked about the mine contact and I gave her Elmer
Bentley's name and phone number.
She indicated that people were promised that they would be notified regarding blasting but were not. I explained that we
had in our possession 32 certified receipts of notices sent to residents in the area. She asked if she could get a FAX of
the notice that was sent to the landowners.
She asked whether the blasting agent comes to the mine mixed and ready for blasting. I told her that the mine took
delivery of "grill" and I believed that the grill is not mixed with fuel oil until the blast holes are loaded. However, I indicated
that the mine personnel would be the people to give her the details regarding this issue.
She indicated that the Chronicle-News is a local Trinidad daily paper and is apparently not widely read by the people in the
outlying rural areas. She indicated that the Trinidad Plus is the paper of choice of mast of the rural people. Therefore, in
her opinion, public notices in the Chronicle-News may not be getting to the people in the vicinity of the mine.
I explained the control measures regarding dust from roads and that the mine has recently begun applying tree sap to the
road surfaces and that my opinion of that control measure indicated very favorable results.
She indicated that there would be a forthcoming article about dust, and then maybe one more and "then that's it".
She stated that during the county SUP approval process, the mine did not do a good job in their presentation to the new
commissioners and that resulted in a cartoon of the mine folks huddled in a corner of a classroom wearing a dunce cap.
I gave her a brief explanation of the public involvement required by our Rules and indicated that we inspect the site 12
times each year by regulation.
The conversation ended cordially
