Lamm
Governor
December 9, 1983
Mr. Steve Mills
Vice President for Administrative Services
Colorado Mountain College
Central Business Office
401 W. First
Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601
Re: Possible Cancellation of Environmental Protection Technology Program
Dear Mr. Mills:
Our Division was notified by Mr. Kenneth S. Klco, mine superintendent
of Genstar Building tlaterials Company's Coaldale gypsum quarry, of the
possible termination of your Environmental Protection Technology Program.
As I understand it, this program is located at your Timberline Campus in
Leadville, Colorado. I would like to take this opportunity to make some
observations about the program as it relates to Mr. Klco's mining operation
While I cannot testify to an extensive knowledge of the program itself, I
can testify to the results of the work of some of its students over the last
four years at the Coaldale quarry. This mining operation has made real
progress in the reclamation of this very harsh, dry site. I have personally
seen the results of the work of the students in your program manifested
in the reclamation progress made at this site. Through my conversations
with Mr. Klco, perusal of the annual reports on his mining operations, and
inspections of the site, it became clear to me that without the work of
the students in your program the reclamation of the site would have been
more difficult for the company.
It is obvious that student participation in a complex, difficult, but
successful reclamation project such as this has benefits to the company
involved, the students in the program, and the State of Colorado.
Therefore, I would urge you to carefully consider your alternatives
before terminating a program that has shown such obviously positve results.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
