Bureau of Land hianagement
October 4, 1990
Page 2
Site 5kT118 is situated on the edge of the proposed permit
boundary on the opposite side of the drainage in which
the proposed North haulroad exits the minesite to the
northwest (Exhibit 5.1 shows that portion of the proposed
haulroad disturbance boundary that might influence the
integrity of the site). It is situated outside proposed
disturbance areas. However, it is highly probable that
blasting wiil be conducted within 2,000 feet of the rock
art panels. For these reasons, Peabody proposes the
following plan to protect and mitigate the site.
The first step will be to document the rock art panels
using photography and drawings. This will be conducted by
Peabody's consulting archaeologists in consultation with
the appropriate regulatory authorities to insure proper
implementation. Documentation of the rock art panels is
deemed necessary in the unlikely event that proximate
blasting might damage the rock face. The second step will
be the posting of "Disturbance Boundary" signs around the
area where the fire-rock was discovered. This will insure
that the area surrounding the site is avoided during
construction of the haulroad. These activities will Ge
completed prior to commencement of construction or blasting.
Your timely response t
site 5RT118 would be
questions, please don't
o the plan to protect and mitigate
appreciated. If you have any
hesitate to contact nie.
Sincerely,
Brian P. Dunfee
Manager,
Environmental Studies
jdc
Mike Metcalf (w/o enclosure)
Carl Mount
