Criterion d. Criterion d indicates that if a resource has potential to yield
scientific data about past lifeways, it is significant.
Evaluation of Research
Previous research in the area has presented data that suggests a low
overall site density. Our survey provides similar results.
Recommendations
No further work is recommended for the isolated find, 5RT709. Concerning
5RT118, we feel the site is significant and has potential to contribute to our
understanding of prehistoric lifeways in the Colorado Mountains. We recommend
a two phased effort to first test the site and fully document the rock art, then
if needed, implement a mitigation plan.
This first phase of testing will involve both photographic documentation
of the rock art and three to four subsurface test pits on the slope below the
rock art panel. The rock art will be photographed with color and black-and-
white film. The test pits will be placed to gain information on the two burned
rock clusters end the area between the two burned rock clusters.
If the subsurface testing yields substantial evidence for prehistoric
resources, a mitigation plan will need to be implemented. The mitigation plan
will be written after the testing and will be based upon the testing results.
If subsurface testing does not yield substantial remains no additional work will
be required.
References Cited
Avazian, Brian
1985 Texaco USA Seismic Line X85-40-19.
