The Shannon-Weiner Index is one
of the most widely accepted methods for expressing diversity, though it is
not the only one. It is generally desirable that the postmining plant
communities be similar to premining communities in terms of the number of
major species and relative cover of individual species. Zt is not required
that each major species in the pre-mine community be established following
mining.
Since, under the Colorado regulations, measurements of cover and production
need only include herbaceous vegetation, the expression of diversity
discussed above does not pertain to woody vegetation. Woody plants are
evaluated separately in terms of density.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
Dan Mathews
Reclamation Specialist
/k
encl.
~~
November 13, 1980
