:~..:

PIONEER CANON PROJECT
work Narrative
The fire investigation and control poject will consist of two phases. The
second phase will be undertaken if it is found feasible after investigation in
phase I.
Phase I Work:
A drilling program has been developed from information obtained from work which
was completed under the previous Coal Fires Project in the 10th Grant. It is
anticipated that 24-30 rotary drill holes with depths from 40 to 150 feet will
be needed to refine existing information and define the fire. Each drill hole
will penetrate the Double-Dick mine workings and coal in the "Brookside" seam
to determine remaining coal and void amounts. Samples of the mine atmosphere
may be obtained and pressure differentials within the mines may be determined.
Drill holes will be sealed by circulating a bentonite abandonment mud upon
retreat. Thermocouples will be installed in some holes to monitor temperature
variations. The annular volume in thermocouple holes will be backfilled and
the drillhole sealed with a threaded air-tight cap. No air will be allowed to
enter or circulate into the drilled holes in an uncontrolled fashion. Several
subsidence craters and two steaming vents will also be backfilled during the
project work.
Information developed in this phase will be used to develop the pilot project
in phase two, or alternatively, evaluate other abatement techniques which
appear more feasible.
