Box 2927
Telluride, CO 81435
RE: Montrose Counry West End gravel pit status.
Dear Ms. Farrell;
Durango Fleld Oflice
Diviebn o} Minerals 3 Geology
MAY 19 1997
~ncrnuUU6 i1dA?Eplq $
AND WASTE ngtilvgOEMENr
Please find included, a description of County actions as a result of the inspection performed by the
Division of Minerals and Geology, a plat of BLM/West End Pit and a plat of the Gilmore Pit.
Nucla Pit M-83-162, BLM/West End Pit M-92-017
Enclosed is a plat of the affected area of these two pits. As can be seen no mining has occurred
outside of the boundaries but topsoil has been stored outside of the permitted area. During your
inspection of the site you commented on disturbances that were clearly outside of the boundary
specifically to the North of the Nucla Pit. This entire area was once an automobile racetrack.
some of the remains are still visible, including portions of the grandstand foundation, part of the
tra<;k, parking area and so on. Consequently, most of the disturbance we were looking at was
from the old raceway. What we thought was an old loading dock was actually part of the old
grandstands. Our Road and Bridge crew was not aware that it was not permissible to store the
topsoil on County Property just outside of the pit boundary. Much of this topsoil has been in
place for 30 to 40 years. Road & Bridge has been instructed to remove the barrels, construct
sediment control structure, shape up and vegetate topsoil stockpile and install more boundary
markers. The County Commissioners have not made a final decision rather to reclaim the Nucla
Pit or convert it to a 112 permit. I will contact the Division as soon as a decision is made. A
technical revision will be applied for on the BLM/West End Pit.
Gilmore Pit M-80-109
121 S. Townsend Ave.
P.O. Boz 128'7 Phone (970) 249-6688
h1on~rose.
