Berry
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St., Rm. 215
Denver CO 80203
Deaz Mr. Berry,
I was neaz the GEC reclamation area in Section 24 today, and I noticed
a new subsidence feature with considerable smoke. The hole is about
ten feet in diameter and has subsided ten or twelve feet. The smoke is
coming from the edges without an obvious void. This hole is fairly new
judging from the vegetation around the top edge; there is little burning c
the grass. This hole is located about two hundred feet north of the
southeast comer of the fence around the old fire area and about fifty f~
east of that fence.
We have given some thought to the possible remedial work on the GEC
east pit. We think that the road that Energy must use to go to the'v fan is
probably the highest priority job, especially through the east pit drainage
area. We have two used thirty inch culverts that would be long enough to
put in the bottom, if that would be any help to you. The concrete structures
are probably damaged beyond saving, and we don't have any suggestions at
this point. The other major problems aze the gullies on the various slopes. I
don't know if there is any useful way to stop their continued down cutting
since these slopes are too steep as constructed. Yes, some of the slopes are
steeper than the speciScations of the original contract, and I doubt that
anything can be done now. Contour ditches would have been a real help, but
probably not now.
Sincerely, C',p!`~~ ~ ^ f d~~
GU~L4,~-.~-~.~- ~ ~~'~
W.D.
