•
Tatman and Hartley are now in ajoint venture with Franklin Consolidated Mining
Co., which is being hauled before the mining board to respond to DMG inspection
evidence that
* the company tailed to submit rcyuired goundwater analyses and failed "to minimize
disturbances to_.. the quality and quantity of water in surface and groundwater systems;
* a drainage ditch had been backfilled; a drainage diversion and a drainage pipeline were
no longer functional; and "disturbances to the hydrologic balance of the affected land and
surrounding area" had not been minimized;
* tailings had been placed on unlined areas of the tailings pond embankment and in other
unsuitable areas and constituted "failure to handle acid forming ortoxic-producing
material in a manner that will protect the drainage system from pollution."
Friends of Eldora Valle} plans to ask the mining board, at its February 21-22
hearing, to draw the obvious conclusions from a series of facts: 1) Wayne batman
abandoned a mine in Washington that left cyanide wastes in groundwater; 2) three waste
spills occurred at Gold Hill under the supervision of Tatman and Hartley; 3) Tatman and
Hartley are now partipants in the joint venture at the Idaho Springs mill; 4) a January
state inspection of the Idaho Springs mill showed multiple waste drainage threats: 5) the
Idaho Springs Mill, like Ta[man's superfund site, is designed for a cyanide process.
The "cyanide catastrophe at Summitville," says FEV's Teter, "should prompt the
board to leave no stone unturned to block Front 12ange mining by demonstrably
incompetent and irresponsible operators."
