Bear
Coal Company worked diligently with the Colorado State Highway
Department to obtain fill material to construct the dike.
Negotiations with the Highway Department to date have been
unsuccessful in obtaining the fill material; therefore, Bear Coal
Company was not able to construct the dike as scheduled.
Due to the necessity of having a dike in place prior to spring runoff,
Bear Coal Company plans to continue working with the Highway
Department and other personnel in the Somerset, Colorado area to
obtain suitable fill material so that the dike can be constructed.
Current site conditions preclude dike construction until after the
frost has left the ground and the snow melted. Normally, spring
runoff is expected to peak during the last week of May or the first
week of June. The Bear Coal Company Mine No. 3 site conditions are
suitable for dike construction during the last part of April and first
part of May. Therefore, sufficient time is available for construction
of the flood control dike prior to the spring runoff.
