P. °Prtl JI:: IV
SUGCESTI017S POR ULTIPtATE USE
' Five suggestions for possible ultimate use of the quarry came out o1: a
short "brainstorming" session. None of the suggestions has been investi.I;ated;
' nec<1s and opportunities for use of such sites may change markedly in the 10
to :?5 years that the quarry may operate.
' A discussion of the suggestions may, however, point out some of the
regsirements and potential impacts of such uses. The quarry might t1,en be
developed so it can be adapted to one or more of them.
Su£gestions
1. Sanitary landfill.
1 2. Storage for recreation vehicles.
' 3. Parking terminal for mass transportation into Denver.
4. Overnight "cliff-dweller" campground for people with campers of
' camping trailers.
5. Stadium.
1. Sanitary landfill. Areas for disposal of solid wastes will undoubtedl}•
continue to be in demand and suitable areas swill shrink. Landfill is a historical
' use of sand and gravel pits. But this location nay be less suitable than
some because of the water that passes through it.
' Needs. The terraces would need to be kept open and travelable by
garbage trucks. Soil, or similar material, would be needed [o keep fill
materials covered and shielded from flies and the wind. Quite a lot of soil
:~olld be needed to form the ultimate surface over the fill. In addition, the
' p;u;s:.ge f.or storm and flood waters under r.he present operations area would have
to be kept in good operating condition indefinitely. Flood-strewn garbage
would not be appreciated dorm stream,
' Environmental impacts. l:hile open and operating there would be a risk
of unpleasant odors, flies, and possibly rats attracted to the area, There
' :could he a continuing risk of pollution in the water:: of Strain Gulch. In
tlic even t. that the passage under the fill failed, then water would back up
behind the fill. Flash-floods might in time break over the fill and sluice it
' downstream.
Phis suggestion carries the greatest threat of environr:ental damage. The
Company will want also tc consider the ultimate use of its remaining land.
' A sanitary landfill is not compatible with uses such as suburban dwelling.
2. Storaf;e for recreation vehicles. Ownership of recreation vehicles
' i; increasing; durand for parking, 'uoth "live" and "dead; increases with
c~,ner~hip. kecrcation~vehicles cannot, or should not, be parked on some
streets. A:any heroes, apartments, and condominiums have inadequate parking
' space for them.
it
