26
'
6. Equipment house at top of quarry. This house appeared out of
place in a ridge top (Figures 7, 11, 1972) in the middleground.
t It was visible from four photo points.
7. Quarry walls. The quarry was located behind ridges to conceal
it as much as possible from the main travel routes below. Most
' of the quarry walls will remain concealed, but the tops are
becoming visible form both U.S. Highway 285 and Colorado High-
' way Number 8.
From Route 285 the top of the north wal] is recognizable in the
background from Kipling Street interchange. The viewer must
' know what to look for, however. Going west from Kiplin9 Street
on Route 285 the quarry wall is visible for 0.4 mile (background)
then is out of view for 0.6 mi]e, The top two benches then become
visible (middleground range) for 1.1 miles of highway. Three
' fleeting views may be seen between the Mt. Glennon Ridge and the
Highway 8 interchange.
' Going north on Highway 8 the top of the north face of the quarry
becomes visible at about the Fort Restaurant and remains visible
for 0.7 mile. Coming south a small section of the south wall of
' the quarry is visible for a distance of about 1/2 mile.
In 1972 the quarry cuts were visible from only two photo points.
' 8. Utility lines (Figure 12, 1972 report). The utility lines to the
quarry add to a jumble of utility lines already present. They
' were conspicuous from only one photo point.
Future Impacts
Visual impacts of the roads and buildings are decreasing. Visual impacts
' of the quarry may increase moderately.
' The scalehouse and equipment house have been painted to conform with their
surroundings. They are now inconspicuous.
The fills along the haul road (features 1 and 3) and the face of the quarry
' fill (feature 4) have been seeded to grasses by hydromulching, The outside
fill of the service road (feature 5) is revegetating quite nicely. It
is already much less conspicuous in summer than in 1972. Numerous mountain-
mahogany plants that have started on it should help blend it with surroundings
' as they grow. It should continue to become less conspicuous. More of the
north wall of the quarry is ]ikely to become visible from a distance, as from
t Kiplin9 Street area and the 14t. Glennon area. No additional area should
become visible from Highway 8. Slightly more south wall may become visible
to the travellers moving south on Highway 8.
' The quarry will continue to be conspicuous from high points of the Denver
Mountain Park unit southwest of the quarry. It will not be visible from the
Canyon of Strain Gulch for more than a few hundred feet above the quarry.

1
