24

'
Traffic and quarry activity may discourage use of the area by the more
shy forms of wildlife (foxes, coyotes), but does not seem to discourage
' use of surrounding habitat by deer, It should have little effect on rabbits
and many birds. Workmen at the quarry report that golden eagles use the
high rocky points about 1/2 mile west of the quarry for nesting and roosting.
' The operation apparently is not discouraging their use of that site.
Rehabilitation and restoration of disturbed areas can restore part of
the lost habitat, but not all of it. If final rehabilitation includes a
' pool of water in the quarry aquatic life will benefit. The site would
also be more attractive for some kinds of terrestrial wildlife such as
cliff swallows.
' F
re Im
ts
t
pac
u
u
The ten to eighteen additional acres that may be disturbed by completing
the quarry all represent good shrub habitat for species such as deer
and rabbits.
' Recommendations
Same as for Vegetation.
' Archeology
t The Morrison vicinity is rich in archeological remains. A file search
in the Office of the State Archeologist revealed four known locations
(Appendix I). Afield search of all the Cooley Gravel Company lands
surrounding the quarry site was therefore made by Professor E. Charles
' Adams of the Department of Anthropology, University of Colorado. No
archeological values were found on the Cooley property. One archeological
site along Strain Gulch that might have been affected was excavated in
' the 1950's (Appendix II).
Nature of Impacts
' None.
History
The State Historical Societ y of Colorado reported no knowledge of sites
of historical significance that might be affected, Appendix III.
' Nature of Impacts
None.
' i
Scen
cs
Two reports will be made on scenics, the present report and an enlarged
' report.
1
