Provide for storm run-off to
pass from this watershed into Strain Gulch without obstruction, and
without eroding quarry roads.
Atmosphere
Nature of Impacts
No phase of the operation will affect weather or climate; but all phases
have a detrimental impact on air quality, Table 1. As air quality
and noise are being studied by other consultants, they will be discussed
only briefly here.
Sources of air pollutants are:
1. Internal combustion engines used in mining, crushing, road
construction and hauling.
2. Dust from the crusher, the stockpiles and from mining.
3. Noise, primarily from mining and crushing.
Of the pollutants produced at the quarry, dust is serious on-site, close
to the crusher and sorter. 6lorkers in the dust area wear protective
respirators.
Pollution from the quarry is not likely to be significant off-site for
the following reasons:
1. The site is remote from most habitations. The nearest occupied
house is 3/4 mile east of the quarry.
2. Only strong westerly winds will move dust off-site to the east,
in the direction of the habitations.
3. Under strong wind conditions other pollutants are swept away
rapidly; there is no build-up.
4. Testing of noise has found no detectable increase in noise levels
beyond 1/4 mile from the quarry. Noise levels are increased in
parts of the nearest unit of the Denver Mountain Parks, but not
at any habitations. (Letter of March 20, 1975 from Kenneth lJ.
Carlson, Colorado School of Plines to Dale Ream, Cooley Gravel
Company). No neighbors have ever complained of noise.
5. Dustfall was collected from July G, 1972 through May, 1974 at fui~~
locations around the quarry. Dustfall was analyzed monthly thr,~~~•,~
July 13, 1973 and quarterly thereafter. At a dust collecting
station at the western edge of the quarry dustfall was about twi~~
as much as at a busy intersection in an urban area. At all nthc~~
