Dept. of Natural Resources
Subject: Examination of C&J Gravel Products, Inc. Operation (T.34N., R.9W.,
Section lO, NE ;NW a)
On July 16, 1981, Mike Long, Colorado Division of Mined Land Reclamation,
Scott Hogrefe and I conducted an examination of the subject gravel operation
on private land. My observation from the pit area is that the highwall on
the west does not present as great a problem as it originally appeared.
Recontouring could probably be accomplished and not impact the public land
to the west.
The north highwall is the most critical in that it is near vertical,
approximately 75-100 feet in height, and is within approximately 30 feet
of tfie line between private and public land. It appeared that some material
had come down from above as a result of recent heavy rainfall. During the
time we were near the highwall, material (small amounts) was falling from
the face. I took photos from various angles of the west and north sides of
the excavation area. (Will be attached later).
As we were about to leave, Mr. Carl Strohecker arrived and we spent some
time discussing what was intended for reclamation. Mr. Strohecker 'said they
- plan to take overburden material from the west side and place it on and at
the base of the highwall on the north. Mr. Jack Gilleland arrived and said
the same concerning the reclamation.
Mike Long and I have the same question and the same opinion as to the
feasibility of the reclamation plan. We question whether there is enough
mates°i al available to stabilize the north highwall and whether they can
obtain the slope indicated in their Colorado State permit (3:l).
Mike and I agree that all that can be done at this time is make periodic
checks and just observe the situation and what reclamation efforts take
place.
