DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR <br />OFFICE OF SURFACE MINING <br />RECLAMATION AND ENFORCEMENT <br />NOTICE OF DECISION <br />AND AVAILABILITY OF A TECHNICAL <br />AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR <br />SALT CREEK MINING COMPANY'S <br />McCLANE CANYON MINE <br />GARFIELD COUNTY, COLORADO <br />The United States Department of Interior. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation <br />and Enforcement, has approved. with stipulations, a three-year permit for Salt <br />Creek Company to mine coal. <br />The Salt Creek Mining Company has operated the McClave Canyon Mine in Garfield _____ <br />- ---County since 1977. This mine is located about 20 miles north of Lama, Color- <br />ado and 1 mile off of State highway 5139. The applicant is producing coal <br />using a room and pillar mining method and anticipates a production of 296,000 <br />tons for 1982. Their production for 1981 was 123,000 tons. The expected life <br />• of the mine is 3 years with a total production of 369.500 tons. The coal is <br />mined from the Upper Cretaceous Mesa verde formation, Cameo seam. The pro- <br />posed mine will underly some (248) acres and has already disturbed (7.7 acres} <br />of land for surface facilities. <br />Any person with an interest which is or may be adversely affected, may request <br />an adjudicatory hearing on the final decision by August 19, 1982 after this <br />notice in accordance with Section 514(c) of the Surface Mining Control and <br />Reclamation Act. Any hearing will be governed by 5 U.S.C. Section 554. A <br />petition for review of the Office of Surface Mining decision should be sub- <br />mitted to: <br />Hearings Division <br />Office of Hearings and Appeals <br />U. S. Department of the Interior <br />4015 Wilson Boulevard <br />Arlington, Virginia 22203 <br />Pursuant to Sections 1501.4(c) and 1506.6 of Title 40, Code of Federal Regula- <br />- tions, notice is hereby given that the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation <br />and Enforcement (OSM) has completed a Technical and Environmental Assessment <br />on the mining plan for the Bear #1, #2 & #3 mines, Gunnison County, Colorado. <br />OSM's recommendation, approval of the plan and permit application with stipu- <br />lations, is in accordance with Section 510 and 523 of the Surface Mining Con- <br />trol and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). OSM's analysis shows that no significant <br />environmental impacts would occur if the applicant's proposal is approved. <br />• <br />
