f
Aobert Weaver
2054 County Road 730
Gunnison, CO 81230
Property Owner
Address
Gunnison, CO 81230
Dear Property Owner;
This letter ie written to inform you of a few issues regarding the O.C. ~2 Mine.
The O.C. f2 Mine, when in operation produced approximately 70 to 7,000 tone per
year of coal from a Federal coal lease. The O.C. f2 Mine was opened in 1943 and
operated until 1962, when it was closed voluntarily. Henry Weaver reopened the
mine in July 1968 and operated the mine until October 1978, at which time Macar
Hining Corporation sub-leased the mine property. Macar operated the mine under
the sub-lease agreement until July 15, 1981. The Weavers took over the operation
at that time and were issued a permit from the Division of Minerals & Geology
(previously Mined Land Reclamation Division). I have been the operator of the
mine since April 10, 1991. The permitted area is identified as follows: S!y of
lots 1 and 2, which said lots are coextensive with the SE's of the NEB and the SW's
of the NE7~ of Section 16, Township 15 South, Range 86 Weet, 6th P.H., containing
approximately 80 acres.
During mining operations, the O.C. ~2 Mine employed conventional two-entry room
and pillar underground mining methods. Rooms are 20 feet wide on 40 to 100 foot
centers. Coal ie mined by undercutting the coal with a cutting machine, drilling
the face and blasting. A locomotive and two ton cars were used to haul the coal
to the surface. At the time the mine was permitted, the Division determined that
no renewable resource lands would be affected by the O.C. i2 Mine; therefore, a
sutieidence control plan was not needed. To date, no discernable surface effects
have been noted which are a result of mining.
The surface operations associated with the mine occupy an area approximately 3.22
acres in size. Mining ceased in 1992, the portals have been partially backfilled
to prevent access, and reclamation of the surface disturbance should be completed
by November 1, 1995.
The state permit for the coal mine will be maintained at least ten years after
reclamation ie performed or until revegetation success ie achieved. After
revegetation success ie achieved, procedures will be implemented to discontinue
the state coal mine permit.
If you would like additional information regarding the mining performed in the
area or any of the above issues, please write or call me at 970-641-0076.
Sincerely,
Robert Weaver
