r • •
Mr. Rick Mills
Ms. Carol Pahlke
May 18, 1979
Page Three
a width of approximately two feet. The cradles are held in place with
re bar stakes. The cradle system provides flexibility in maintenance
since the cradles can easily be cleaned and fresh hay substituted for
the soiled hay. The straw dikes are working very well and have approx-
imately a 2" head loss across them.
The Rockcastle Company has cleaned the entrances and exits to its culvert
system. In some cases the culverts have been extended to prevent collapse
of the exit. A plan has been implemented to riprap the exits of all cul-
verts. Closer attention is being given to the encroachment of the haul
road on Grassy Creek. That portion of Grassy Creek which had been partially
blocked has been cleared and the creek is now flowing smoothly.
We have laid plans for additional erosion control and topsoil handling. The
mine is close to reaching a stable operating mode and topsoil will immedi-
ately be spread on reclaimed areas as outlined in the original permit appli-
cation. The diversion ditch system will be upgraded and runoff from the
storage pile outside the diversion ditch at pit B will be accomodated by
a small depression built to capture runoff from that stockpile only. Addi-
tionally, topsoil stockpiles and dressed downslopes along the haul road
which have topsoil spread on them will immediately be seeded with an appro-
priate spring seed to establish some vegetative cover. In the fall, the seed
mixture approved by the permit will be planted on schedule.
As you know, the mining operation lags the mining sequence outlined in the
permit. This lag is a result of unforeseen market fluctuations and weather
conditions. In order to correct the sequence for your files and to show
minor changes in the road layout and pit locations, we will submit an updated
map and textual explanation of the changes in the very near future. We hope
to submit this information in time for the Board to approve the changes via
a technical revision at the May Board meeting.
If I can answer any questions on the work that has been performed to date or
on future plans for the mine, please feel free to call.
Very truly yours,
-~.-~ ,~- ,P~
Tommy D.
