• Page 2 <br />The two candidate species are the southwestern willow flycatcher (Emyidomax r il" <br />im )and the Mexican spotted owl (~~i. occidentalis lucida). The southwestern <br />willow flycatcher inhabits riparian areas containing willow stands and the Mexican <br />spotted owl inhabits steeply sloped valleys or canyon areas. <br />The Service expects to propose the Mexican spotted owl as a threatened species in the <br />near future. Conferencing, as outlined in the Federal Rep,Ster, (Vol. 51, No. 106, June <br />3, 1986) should ensue if the lead Federal agency detenatines that a Federal action may <br />jeopardize the existance of the Mexican spotted owl.
