3
• construction of a series of 80' x 150' well pads on 300' centers
(see page 2-3, Development Sequence and Schedule), attendant road
access (page 2-9, Access Roads), utilities (page 2-10, Natural
Gas Supply and page 2-11, Electrical Power) and an extensive
elevated pipeline network (see page 2-7, Solution Piping). A
representative 5-year well field layout is presented in Fig. 2-3.
It is estimated that surface clearing, excavation, or occupation
within any given mine panel will involve nearly 70~ of the land
surface (Table 2-2).
Permanent processing and administrative facilities on the
Piceance site will be housed on a 6.3 acre ridgetop site (Fig. 2-
2) A 13-acre lined evaporation pond may be located adjacent to
the facility site. The pond will collect stormwater drainage
from the processing plant along with waste products from boilers
and the cooling tower. American Soda is currently investigating
the feasibility of eliminating the Piceance site evaporation pond
altogether.
Product Pipeline
Mined product would be transported to the Parachute processing
facility as a slurry and the recycled water returned to the
Piceance mine site through a pair of parallel pipelines. The
proposed pipeline corridor is depicted in Figures 2-la through 2-
lh and described on pages 2-12 through 2-14. The selected route
would generally parallel existing pipeline corridors.(which hold
1 or more natural gas pipelines) for about 33 miles of its 44-
mile length (from Magnolia compressor stations, Fig. 2-lb, south
to the Parachute terminus). The pipeline is scheduled to be
constructed over a 4 to 5-month period beginning in April 2000.
Parachute Processin4 Facility
Final product processing and distribution would take place on°the
former Unocal Shale Oil Upgrade Facility site about 2.5 miles
northwest of Parachute, Colorado (Figures 2-lh and 2-9 and pp 2-
14 to 2-16) American Soda's reoccupation of this site would
require a 56-acre expansion to the existing 304-acre extent.
As proposed in the EIS, two lined evaporation ponds, a 15-acre
evaporation pond and an additional 21-acre purge pond, would be
required at the Parachute processing facility.
Water required for solution mining and product processing and
transport is expected to amount to about 1204 acre-feet per year,
and would be taken from the Colorado River at the existing Unocal
intake located near the town of Parachute.
•
