October 30, 1987 Ms. Susan Mowry Reclamation Specialist Colorado Dept. of Natural Resources Mined Land Reclamation Division 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 RE: FTESTERN SLOPE CARBON PORTAL MAINTENANCE PLAN FOR THE HAWR'S NEST MINE EAST PORTAL (Permit No. C-016-81) Dear Ms. Mowry, We appreciate the time you and Jim Pendleton spent with us at the Hawk's Nest Mine on October 28, 1987. As we discussed, Western Slope Carbon intends to conduct maintenance activities at the East Portal. These activities will include removal of slide material which has damaged the entrance structure and caved approximately 25 feet of the entry; repair of the entrance structure and entry; backfill of the repaired structure; and, reclamation of the disturbed area. A sketch of the area is attached which indicates the areas to be included. The following activities will be conducted. Excavation Access to the east side of the portal will be gained by construc- ting a temporary ramp from old Highway 133. Colorado Department of Highways has been contacted and has agreed to restrict traffic on the road by placement of signs during construction activities. The first material to be excavated from the east side will be utilized to construct an access ramp to the west side. The west ramp will be located between the switch gear building and fan (see sketch). Slide material from the east side and above the entry will be handled with a front-end loader. Caved material in the entry will be removed by backhoe from the west side. Due to the extent and stability of the slide material, exact quantities to be removed cannot be determined.
