Letter to Rich Muza
U.S. EPA Region 8
Page 3
We are very pleased with the actions that the DMG and BMRI leave taken to ensure ong--term
protection of [he District's drinking water supply as described in DMG's follow up response dated
February 14, 2000. We also understand the concerns of the community, and support their efforts to
take whatever measures they deem necessary [o monitor and protect their water supply. We gathered
from EPA and DMG that there is some question as to the need for a monitoring well. but no argument
about your recommendation regarding the location should the District decide to proceed with the
drilling.
We have informed the District that funding may be available to support the drilling of [he well, but that
they would have to support the sampling and analyses activities. The placement of .he well and the
monitoring could be undertaken as a component of the "protection" phase of source water assessment
and protection, but is not included in the assessment phase.
The Division truly appreciates the time and effort you have taken in responding to our request. Please
let us know if you have any questions about our interpretations and recommendations.
Sincerely,
~~-~"~-~x~.9-rte
Kathleen Reilly, Watershed Co rdinator, Arkansas & Rio Grande Basin
WATER QUALITY CONTR L DIVISION
cc: Juanita Bernal, SLWSD
Dave Holm, WQCD
Mike McGowan, CCCD
Jim Dillie, DMG
Carol Russell, EPA, Region 8
Bill Lyle, BMRI
