attacf~nent 2
SUBJECT: HDPE Pipe Desi n
GOLDER Job Number: 933-2720 Made by BES Date: 8/25/94
ASSOCIATES Ref: Checked: Sheet of
Reviewed:
F4 NUn~: pip~120.wgt
PIPE STRENGTH AND STABILITY
HDPE PIPE Diameter = 14 inches
SDR = 11
OBJECTIVE: Determine the structural stability of the buried pipe.
The maximum overburden pressure will be calculated and the pipe will be
designed to withstand the maximum load.
METHODOLOGY: The analysis determines the vertical loads acting on the pipe and will
calculate the stress induced at the top of the pipe. The pipe will be evaluated
for wall crushing, wall bucking and ring deflection.
CONCLUSION: The HDPE pipe will be able to withstand the proposed overburden loads
in the heap pad. The pipe will possess the
following safety factors.
Wall Crushing Safety Factor: 2.05
Wall Buckling Safety Factor: 1.50
Pipe Deflection Safety Factor; 1.90
In addition, the calculated pipe deflection is below
the manufacturer's suggested allowable deflection:
Pipe Deflection: 1.42 percent
Allowable Deflection: 2.70 percent
The deflection of the pipe will have negligible effects upon the flow area.
