As described in CC&V's "Responses to Comments by Technical Reviewer, D. P. Engineering,
Inc." dated March 1994 and submitted to the OMLR as Volume V of the Application for
Amendment Number 6, Professor Selig describes experience demonstrating that buried pipes
experience overburden pressures equal to about 20 percent of the total overburden pressure. For
additional safety, these proposed pipes have been assumed to be exposed to 60 percent of the
total overburden pressure. The calculations attached as Attachment 2 demonstrate that the
proposed pipe and configuration will have the following factors of safety for the failure modes
listed:
• Wall Crushing Factor of Safety: 2.05
• Wall Buckling Factor of Safety: 1.50
• Pipe Deflection Factor of Safety: 1.90
• Pipe Deflection: 1.42%
• Allowable Deflection: 2.70%
Because construction of these risers should start with the completion of installation of the lower
liner, it is necessary to receive your approval at your earliest convenience. If there are
questions, please call as soon as possible.
Thank you for your continued assistance.
Sincerely
~_~y " ' ~
Joh E.
