azea is about 52 degrees (Fahrenheit), with the highest recorded temperature in Paonia of ]00
degrees during 1927 and 1934.
Soils Information -
Detailed information regarding the soils within the permit area is located in Section 2.04.9 of the
Bowie No. 2 Mine permit application document. The following summary is derived from Section
2.04.9 of the referenced permit document.
The main azeas that aze disturbed by operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine exhibit the following
soils: the Absazokee (Beenon-Absazokee Association), the Persayo, and the Torriorthents. The
Absazokee soil at the site exhibits a silty loam and silty clay loam texture. The soil exhibits an'A'
horizon depth of about 1.5 to 2.5 inches, with a combined 'N and 'B' horizon depth of about 22 to
38 inches. The soil is typically underlain by sandstone.
The Persayo soil is a silty clay loam. The Persayo soils located at the Bowie No. 2 site exhibit an
'A' horizon of about 1.5 inches deep, with a combined 'A' and 'B' horizon depth of about 18 to 20
inches. The soil is typically underlain by the Mancos Shale.
The Torriorthents soil tends to be associated with rock outcrop areas, and the observed texture is
silty loam. The site soils exhibit'A' horizon depths of about 1.5 inches. The typical combined'A'
and'B' horizon depths range from about 6 to 7 inches.
The operations approved in Permit Revision No. 3 disturbed an additional 11.0 acres, one azea
located south of Old Highway 133 and the other area located just east of the present mine
entrance. Both azeas appeaz to be previously disturbed. The soils present in these disturbed areas
aze similaz to the "Meadow" soil found in other areas of the mine site, as depicted on Map No. 4,
"Soils".
The soil that was disturbed in the construction of the Freeman Gulch vent shaft, through
Technical Revision No. 12, is classified as a Fughes Loam.
The operations approved in Permit Revision No. 6 disturbed soils that are primarily Progresso
Loam and Potts Loam. Bowie Resources Limited requested a variance from topsoil salvaging
beneath the cover fill stockpile at the train loadout azea. Pursuant to Rule 4.06.2(a), the Division
can approve a variance for good cause shown. In this case, BRL planned on salvaging the top
two to three inches of topsoil and then placing geotextile fabric on the coverfill azea. Removal
of the entire topsoil horizon would have resulted in needless damage to the soil chazacteristics.
BRL committed to taking measures to protect the topsoil resource. However, all of the cut
material was used in the fill so no excess coverfill material resulted from the construction of the
train loadout. Therefore, no variance from topsoil salvaging was needed.
Vegetation Information -
Detailed vegetation information for the Bowie No. 2 permit azea is presented in Section 2.04.10
of the permit application document The following summary is derived from the information
presented in Section 2.04.10 of the permit document.
15
