March 12, 1985
Mr. Fred Banta
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
1313 Sherman Street
423 Centennial Building
Denver, Colorado 60203
Subject: Blue Flame Mine
Dear Mr. Banta:

~~)i:C II 1 f.~!l ;.~ ~i F,A A,'1 Q2SUUvCGS ~~
As you are aware the abandoned Blue Flame Mine is located on property now owned
by Powderhorn Coal Company. Several potential hazards exist on and around the old
mine site. Four assessible mine openings are potential hazards to human health
and the environment. The surface area is cluttered with abandoned cars, shacks,
chutes and debris. Having discussed these problems with P1ike Long and Thomas
Gillis of your staff, Powderhorn Coal Company is prepared to initiate steps to
reclaim the Blue Flame Mine portal areas.
If the Division has completed any preliminary work on the Blue Flame Mine through
the Abandoned Mined Lands program, we would appreciate the opportunity to review
any available information. When our review of this information is complete a site
visit can be scheduled so the Division and Powderhorn can agree on the next
logical course of action.
We look forward to working with the Division and resolving these problems of
mutual concern. If you or your staff have any questions please call me.
Again, the Division's continued cooperation is appreciated.
Sincerely,
i ,~i
> ,~,-z,
D e L.
