-35- <br />Discharge of Mine Water from Underground Workings <br />CMLRD performed a salinity analysis to determine the impact of mine water <br />discharges on the North Fork of the Gunnison. This assessment assumes <br />concurrent maximum impact to the river when active mining is developed to its <br />greatest extent throughout the area and the valley experiences a low flow <br />year. Underground mines in this area are generally dry and very little <br />information is available, <br />Water quality data for water in the flooded workings is scarce. However, much <br />of the data can be extrapolated from mine to mine. Water quality samples have <br />been taken at the Somerset, Hawk's Nest and abandoned Oliver No. 2 Mine Adit. <br />Somerset recorded TDS values ranging from 4580 to 4690. MLRD staff recorded a <br />TDS of 1642 mg/1 in the Hawk's Nest East Mine in 1987. TDS concentrations <br />ranged from 1050-1900 mg/1 from the Oliver Mine Adit. This seam is <br />strati graphically similar to seams being mined at Somerset and CWI. Inputs to <br />this analysis will be described from upstream to downstream, starting with the <br />Hawk's Nest Mine and ending with Orchard Valley. <br />The Hawk's Nest Mines are in temporary cessation. Amine discharge of 200 gpm <br />was projected for the purposes of this study. Water quality data reports <br />showed a sample with a total dissolved solids (fDS) concentration of 7020 <br />mg/1. This water was recycled through the Hawk's Nest coal wash plant, and <br />therefore had a higher salinity than the mine inflow water. Mine discharge <br />water is expected to have a TDS of 2500-3000 mg/1 before passing through the <br />wash plant. <br />Mt. Gunnison No. 1 is the only operation in the valley discharging mine water <br />from the underground workings on a permanent basis. Mine discharge during the <br />1987 water year averaged 14.4 gpm but a threeanonth average was reported as <br />high as 48.5 gpm. Maximum mine discharge from the Mt. Gunnison mine was <br />estimated at 1000 gpm (2.23cfs). Worst case salinity was projected at 2500 <br />mg/1 TDS. <br />The portals of the Somerset Mine were permanently sealed in 1986, and no mine <br />flow discharge is predicted from this site. <br />Bear Mines 1 & 2 were similarly sealed in 1983. No mine inflow discharge was <br />recorded at those mines since they opened in 1934. The active site, Bear <br />No. 3, is also dry and has never had a mine inflow discharge either, so for <br />the purposes of this analysis none has been projected. <br />The Blue Ribbon Mine portals were permanently sealed in 1985. Thus, no mine <br />inflow discharge is extrapolated from this site. <br />The Terror Creek Loadout does not have a wash operation. Activities are <br />restricted to crushing, screening and loadout activities. Consequently, no <br />discharge occurs from this site. <br />Colorado Westmoreland has not projected arty mine inflow discharges. Inflows <br />into the mine have averaged 3-5 gpm (0.007-0.11 cfs). The maximum mine <br />discharge from the Orchard Yalley Mine was estimated at 100jgpm for this <br />analysis, with a salinity of 2500 mg/1. <br />
