AMAT(ON nivlc° ors
~. :' . f f . ,,,...
s (.:
f ~~ ev(. ). ~%~
e
As discussed over the phone May 9, the noxious weed white top was
identified on our roadside refuse pile by Dan Matthews on his
April 24, 1990, inspection. The report for that inspection
requires submission of a noxious weed control plan. The request
also specified a rapid response. In the interest of a rapid
response a site specific plan is being submitted for this
location rather than a detailed mine wide plan.
White top (Cardaria draba) is a very common noxious weed in Mesa
County. According to Norm Luepschen of the Grand Valley Pest
Control District the best control means are herbicides.
According to Mr. Luepschen, the rhizome root structure of the
plant prevents effective mechanical control, and he was unaware
of any biological means of control. For control of white top
where other vegetation is of no concern he suggested Roundup and
for more selective control he suggest 2-4-D. Mr. Luepschen also
emphasized that now is the nr.ime time for control measures to be
taken.
The attached portion of Map RS-11-008 shows three general levels
of infestation. Approximately 0.7 acres has a heavy infestation
or over 50$ of the ground cover white top. Approximately 1.1
acres has 10-50$ ground cover of white top and the remaining 3.8
acres has 0-10$ ground cover of white top.
For areas of heavy density the entire area will be sprayed with
2-4-D at a rate of approximately 1 pound/acre and possibly
Banville at 1/2 to 1 pound/acre. The medium density areas will
be more selectively sprayed with 1 pound/acre of 2-4-D and the
light density areas will be spot sprayed with 1 pound/acre
POWDERHORN COAL COMPANY • P.O.
