Water quality continues to be described as a sodium bicarbonate.
Coal mining commonly changes the water quality to acalcium-magnesium-sulfate. Spoil well
026-SP-3 represents the water quality of the small spoil aquifer that is present in the Area 41
reclaimed pit.
We11026-SP-3
Constituent 1999 (mean) value
Sodium 37
Calcium 476
Sulfate 2670
Bicarbonate 795
Solids(dissolved) 4920
Based on aquifer characteristics described in the permit application on page 779-43, the Wadge
overburden has a permeability of 1.3 gallons per day per squaze foot. (gpd/ftZ) The spoil well was
established and the pit reclaimed in 1985. If spoil waters have migrated down gradient, they
would begin to modify the water in well 94M002 in less than 12 years. Based on the recent data,
it is apparent that down gradient waters have not degraded in general water quality.
Recently, the Division of Minerals and Geology (formerly Mined Land Reclamation Division), as
an implementing agency, has been directed to begin protecting existing and potentially beneficial
uses of ground water. This authority is granted pursuant to the Colorado Water Quality Control
Act and promulgated under the sections 25-8-202, 25-8-203, and 25-8-204. The regulations
applicable are those under Regulation No. 41, Tl~e Basic Standards for Ground Water.
Bedrock ground water in the vicinity of Area 41 in Eckman Park is classified as "Potentially
Useable Quality" for the following reasons;
a) TDS levels are less than 10,000 mg/I,
b) Ground water is not used for domestic or agricultural uses,
Colorado Yampa Coal Company: SL07 Findings I I/00 page 11 c:\jhb\C081071\SL07fnd.doc
