Water quality continues to be described as a sodium bicarbonate. <br />Coal mining commonly changes the water quality to acalcium-magnesium-sulfate. Spoil well <br />026-SP-3 represents the water quality of the small spoil aquifer that is present in the Area 41 <br />reclaimed pit. <br />We11026-SP-3 <br />Constituent 1999 (mean) value <br />Sodium 37 <br />Calcium 476 <br />Sulfate 2670 <br />Bicarbonate 795 <br />Solids(dissolved) 4920 <br />Based on aquifer characteristics described in the permit application on page 779-43, the Wadge <br />overburden has a permeability of 1.3 gallons per day per squaze foot. (gpd/ftZ) The spoil well was <br />established and the pit reclaimed in 1985. If spoil waters have migrated down gradient, they <br />would begin to modify the water in well 94M002 in less than 12 years. Based on the recent data, <br />it is apparent that down gradient waters have not degraded in general water quality. <br />Recently, the Division of Minerals and Geology (formerly Mined Land Reclamation Division), as <br />an implementing agency, has been directed to begin protecting existing and potentially beneficial <br />uses of ground water. This authority is granted pursuant to the Colorado Water Quality Control <br />Act and promulgated under the sections 25-8-202, 25-8-203, and 25-8-204. The regulations <br />applicable are those under Regulation No. 41, Tl~e Basic Standards for Ground Water. <br />Bedrock ground water in the vicinity of Area 41 in Eckman Park is classified as "Potentially <br />Useable Quality" for the following reasons; <br />a) TDS levels are less than 10,000 mg/I, <br />b) Ground water is not used for domestic or agricultural uses, <br />Colorado Yampa Coal Company: SL07 Findings I I/00 page 11 c:\jhb\C081071\SL07fnd.doc <br />
