5R-11 (Ike #1 Mine) Designated Mining Operation
January 31, 1995 - Page 8
carnotite in surface waters and normal ground waters is very small.
The vanadium:uranium ratio in the Salt Wash ores of the Slick Rock
District are high (greater than 5: 1) . Cotter uses 8: 1 for SR-11
ore reserves, based on core and rotary drill cutting assays and
past production records for the Radium group of mines (including
the Ike #1) . Therefore, even though uranium tends to oxidize
faster than vanadium, sufficient V'S will be available to fix all
oxidized U+6 within or immediately below the proposed mine waste
rock dump. The re-precipitation of uranium is enhanced by the dry,
porous character of the sandstone which will soak-up and retain
almost all of the rain and snow that fall on it until evaporation
occurs. A Stormwater Management Plan will prevent any waters from
leaving the dump area, even if leaching of uranium does occur.
No other extrinsic elements or minerals have been enriched in the
ore bodies to sufficient amounts to become potential pollutants.
The bulk of the dump will consist of unmineralized rocks which are
chemically similar to the present surface rocks. Therefore, none
of the intrinsic elements or minerals should be considered
pollutants, either.
Dick White
DW/tlt
SR11dmo.dw
