WE5T SIDE OF ACADEMY:
---- ---- -- --------
• As mentioned earlier, the area on the west side of Academy is
characterized by a highly disturbed type of vegetation that is best
described as being weedy. Few natives can be found on the site as it is
dominated by introduced weeds, primarily Russian Thistle, invaded
Sweetclovers, and several other species of common weeds. The only grass
of any importance is Stiea conata, the common invader of disturbed areas
in the Colorado Springs area.
Little more can be said about this area as it is so highly
disturbed that a detailed vegetation inventory and description would be
rather pointless.
DTHER DISTURBED AREAS AND UNITS:
----- --------- ----- --- ------
Dn the east side of Academy can 6e found two basically disturbed
• units. One is the areas where wining is currently occurring. Except
for a few weeds, this area is essentially devoid of vegetation. The
weedy species include various thistles and, of course, StiQa tomato.
The latter species is quite uncommon as the areas are under almost
constant disturbance.
The other area is an area undisturbed by mining and located south
of the ditch section east of the mining area. It appears that this area
was once cultivated and watered from the ditch. But that was the case
many years ago. This old field has been invaded primarily by weeds
including Russian Thistle and especially Chicory and Evening Star.
However, there is also a good deal of encroachment onto the area by
native species invading from surrounding areas. These species include a

F'AEiE 4 C1F 6 - EXHI6IT J
