This t1~,,(1 serves to improve the road management as well as maintain safe roadside conditions. MINING PROCEDUFE_ There are basically three steps involved in the extraction of the sand. These follow in a mare or less sequential pattern, but is still more conceptual than actual. The movement from one part of the sequence to the next is not clearly definable and is more of a gradual change than an aburpt alteration in methodology. The first step which occurs only on areas where the surface has been undisturbed is the removal of topsoil. In areas where there is no topsoil or it has already been removed, this first step is eliminated. Soil is removed 6y loader or dozer. It is stripped to a depth where the dark color of the surface soils 61 end into the much lighter colored sub- soils. This depth tends to be rather variable. In places it may be only four or five inches while in mare protected areas where erasion has not reduced the depth of the surface soil (see Exhibit I - Soils Information) this depth could be a foot or more. Initially. only about three to five acres are stripped. However, ~- • it is possible that two or three such areas might be stripped at a time. ~~ The location of initial stripping is not highly critical, but in general it is in widely separated areas that will eventually merge into one large pit.
