File ~ C-047-81
Dear Robert
Sep~ber 1, 1983 submittal
Iten II.
blue ribbon Co it rom pa ny
li u. bux 58
ilul Li, coloraclu 81416
13031 874756 t
In response to problem X047-83-15, treatment of the Mine bench, Blue Ribbon
Coal Co. is taking the stand that the bench is now stable enough so as not
to present a major danger to personnel, property or the environment. To
achieve the atabiltty needed For a large scale use as a mine bench more
work than is leasable would be needed. We there ore propose to leave the
unstable portion o~f the bench as is except to restrict the use of it more
than in the past,
We have taken care of three areas that we feel may have contributed to the
problem. The sever line formerly was routed from the belt portal west to
within 20 feet of the edge then followed the edge of the bench to the comb-
ination water-sewer-flrain berm off of the hill. We feel [hat this line
vas broken in initial movement of the bench and then contributed water to
saturate the elide area. This sever line has been rerouted`e stable portion
of the bench as deFined by Rocky Mountain Geo[ec. In digging around the
bench an old leach field vas located between the fan portal and the belt
portal. This old leach field la now drained by a French drain which drains
Into the drain line down the utility berm. Upon draining the leach field
the standing eater under the fan drained. The third improvement in the
bench drainage vas to continue the solid mine discharge line across the bench
and part way down the utility berm.
The screen has been repositioned on the bench to t}ie east of the previous
location. According to the Yocky Mountain Geotec s drilling the screen is
on a portion o~ the cu[ bench. The dropped area has been partially re-
graded to allow minor useage.
df there are any 'urther questions you may be able to catch me at 856-6402
or 929-5911.
