Gunnison Mine Permit Stipulation No.~,dr
concerning the dry meadow reference area we have discussed with your
office and that of Mr. Tom Guobis of the Office of Surface Mining the
selection of additional acreage for use as a dry meadow reference area
and the sampling of these additional areas. These discussions resulted
in a site visit on July 15 with Mr. Guobis.
During the site visit several areas suggested by yourselves as possible
additions to the existing dry meadow reference area were examined. The
east end of the upper waste rock pile bench is not useable since it will
be covered by waste rock. A small area just south of the Sylvester
Gulch Test Adit is too small to ensure proper management and the Test
Adit area is destined to be a major fan house location. The area approx-
imately one half mile south of the Test Adit is outside the permit area.
The area on the point immediately southeast of the existing reference
area is considerably different in its vegetative composition than the
disturbed area. These facts forced the selection of the alternative to
expand the existing dry meadow reference area to encompass all adjacent
areas not covered by shrubs or spring/wetland associated vegetation.
Our m?as~trement of this newly defined reference area indicates that it
covers approximately 2.3 acres. Mr. Guobis indicated that the newly
defined reference area appeared to meet the stipulation requirements but
that he would confirm his findings with you.
With regard to sampling the newly defined reference area it was brought
to your attention that both the reference area and disturbed area had
been grazed within the past several months. We reviewed the effects of
grazing during the site visit and determined that the reference area was
much more intensively grazed than was the disturbed area. We indicated
that any vegetation sampling, especially productivity sampling, would
result in data invalidating the similarity of the disturbed area to the
reference area. We suggested that sampling be deferred until 1982 when
cattle grazing would be under the direct control of ARCO Coal. Mr.
Guobis was in general agreement with this viewpoint and indicated he
would discuss his findings with you.
A RCO Coal Com~
Permits an o
•qco Coal Comoanp la a DNblon of Gllan ec qic M1lle laCOmoanv A ~~ l.0 r W %
