There are presently three active pits at the mine, They are Ashmore, Derringer, and
Enfield Pits. The coal seams mined in each pit are respectively H and I,
Upper/Main/Lower Q, R-rider/R, and Main/Lower Q. (See Attachment 2 - next page.)
The coal at the trapper Mine is ranked as a high volatile class C bituminous and
averages less than O.SY, sulfur. Coal characteristics are summarized in the follow-
ing table:
PARAMETERS
ANALYZED
COAL
H I K-L-M Q R
% MOISTURE 12.02 12.19 18.10 14.18 14.84
XASH 5.93 4.86 3.47 5.99 4.43
FIXED CARBON 36.24 40.22 47.21 42.54 45.45
X SULFUR 0.68 0.43 0.26 0.35 0.42
BTU/lb 10,747 10,862 10,400 10,364 10,479
METHOD OF MINING
Surface strip mining is the only method of mining used at the Trapper Mine. Three
30-cubic-yard capacity draglines remove the overburden (waste material) to expose
the coal seams. Before the overburden is removed, topsoil is salvaged with dozers
and scrapers. The topsoil is stockpiled for re-use later in reclamation of the
mined area or replaced directly on regraded areas.
Following the removal of vegetation and topsoil, the overburden is drilled with a
rotary drill according to a selected pattern.
