• _ ~ III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
~tECEIVE~
MAY 2 4 1995
Divs,on o, mn~erais ~ cieology
Carl B Mount
Dept. of Natural Resources
Div of Minerals and Geology
State of Colorado
Dear Mr Mount,
Awhile back I spoke with you about my concerns regarding
the magnitude of sand and gravel mining south of Fort Collins
and visible from I-25. Since then the pace has picked up
greatly and it's now being referred to as "gravel pit alley".
If some control measures aren't undertaken soon, much of this
beautiful region will resemble the old mined areas along the
South Platte River south of Greeley.
Last week, 1 called your office and spoke with one of
your associates in your absence. I had just driven to Wyoming
and back on I-25 over Mother's Day and was appalled at the
new area involved along the St Vrain River and environs just
east of where I-25 crosses the river. This is north of
Johnson's Corner and is as accurate as I can be in pin
pointing the location. The St Vrain River is identified by a
highway sign by I-25. I strongly suspect that this area of
mining does impact on wetlands and, as I mentioned to you
previously, I feel that evaluation of this by the appropriate
agency is indicated.
As you can tell, Im very concerned about the adverse
environmental aspects of this rapidly expanding, uncontrolled
operation, and feel that Borne control measures must be under-
taken before it's too late.
Sincerely,
Herber~t~~R}p~.
