the reference area for species composition and will establish a species diversity standard in
consultation with DMG. The prescribed seed mix and woody plant stocking rates may change based
on this sampling and consultationwith DMG to achieve the specific reclamation objectives.
V.D.4.i Remedial Treatment of Refuse Areal
The refuse area 1 (RP-1) was reclaimed in 1990. However, as of the Spring of 1997, the revegetation
success was unacceptable. A meeting was held with DMG and BLM personnel and a plan to reseed
the refuse area was developed.
Soil Preparation: The RP-1 area was disked or plowed within the first two weeks of May, 1997 to a
depth of 8-12 inches. Enough passes were made with the implement to insure burial of the majority of
the existing seed bank to at least 4 to 6 inches. The area was disked again in the fall (September) to
bury any seed that might have emerged, and prepared for seeding.
Herbicide: The interim use of Herbicide (Round-up) as additional treatment was not planned, but
would have been an option for areas where disking to the proper depth might not be possible.
Seeding: Seeding was done with three (3) separate seed mixes and consisted of three (3) separate
application techniques. (See Table V-13 for the seed mix.) In Table V-13, Seed Mix "G" is the basic
grass mix and was drill seeded through the standard box of the seed drill to a depth of 1/2 inch. Seed
Mix "T" consists of "trashy seeds" and was drill seeded through a drill box equipped with picker wheels
for trashy seed. The seeding depth for this mix was 1l2 inch. Seed Mix "B" includes mainly small
seeded species and was broadcast seeded. This was accomplished by hydro-seeding, hand
broadcasting, or by use of other mechanized broadcasters and was done after drill seeding had been
completed.
Mulch: Straw mulch was applied to seeded areas following seed application at the rate of 1.0 ton per
acre. Straw mulch was crimped with a flat blade disk crimper 1l2" - 2" deep on 8 to 12" centers.
Additional Measures: There are a number of rock piles located on top of the reclaimed area. Seed
drilling was excluded around these piles for an area of approximately 50-75 feet (irregular) each, with
only the broadcastseed mix being applied. This was to enhance the establishmentof less competitive
species of (orbs and shrubs.
The application rate on the seed mix table for "galleta" assumed that the entire florets would be
seeded; the rate was reduced to 0.5 Ibs/acre if this was not the case.
ExhibitE-Reclamation Plan Rio Blanco Special Use Permit#81.1 September2000
V-29
