Dept. of Natural Resources
In response to your letter of January 8, 1982 to Director Grieb requesting certain
modifications in your elk calving behavior study, the following decisioru have been
made:
(1) We are satisfied that you have thoroughly researched and doctumnted a null/
peak antenna system vs. vaginal implant telemetry and we grant your re-
quest to ~ntinue plans to use vaginal implant telemetry.
(2) Your request to use the drug M99 is also granted provided you ear tag each
animal on which the drug has been used. The ear taq will state something
to the effect that a drug was used for cahich there is no Fi]A approval and
the Colorado Division of Wildlife in Gram] Junction or Colorado Yampa Coal
Company must be notified prior to human ~nsumotion of meat as discussed
with Terrell at the January 15, 1982 meeting between Terrell, John Ellenberger,
Bill Clark, and Dr. Bill Lance. It is our understanding that you will provide
us with written doctmtentation that this is acceptable to the FOH.
(3) Your request to do i~lant surgery on elY, trapped in our joint trapping
operation is granted and trapping operations are scheduled to o~mterLCe
March 1, 1982.
(4) It is our decision to allow only Dr. Lance or Dr. Visintainer to do this
surgery. We will not approve this kind of surgery by technicians trained
during tl'Lis operation for reasons described to Terrell at the January 15
meeting .
We also Could reiterate that it is exceedingly imLrortant to establish protocal
for the trapping operation to facilitate quicYsess and efficiency. Additionally
you should arrange cer-fa~~ details regarding ancillary equipment needs with Lance,
Visintaines and CL~1 Jim Hicks as discussed January 15.
Once again a hunting policy for Colorado Yampa Coal Crnrpany seems to be in the best
interests of your ootttpany for several reasons.
