The average minimum temperature in the area is about 45 degrees (Fahrenheit), with the lowest <br />temperature of -28 degrees recorded in Paonia during 1913. The average high temperature in the <br />azea is about 52 degrees (Fahrenheit), with the highest recorded temperature in Paonia of 100 <br />degrees during 1927 and 1934. <br />Soils Information - <br />Detailed information regarding the soils within the permit azea is located in Section 2.04.9 of the <br />Bowie No. 2 Mine permit application document. The following summary is derived from Section <br />2.04.9 of the referenced permit document. <br />The areas that are disturbed by operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine exhibit the following soils: <br />the Absarokee (Beenon-Absarokee Association), the Persayo, and the Torriorthents. The <br />Absarokee soil at the site exhibits a silty loam and silty clay loam texture. The soil exhibits an'A' <br />horizon depth of about 1.5 to 2.5 inches, with a combined 'N and 'B' horizon depth of about 22 to <br />38 inches. The soil is typically underlain by sandstone. <br />The Persayo soil is a silty clay loam. The Persayo soils located at the Bowie No. 2 site exhibit an <br />'A' horizon of about I.5 inches deep, with a combined 'A' and 'B' horizon depth of about 18 to 20 <br />inches. The soil is typically underlain by the Mancos Shale. <br />The Torriorthents soil tends to be associated with rock outcrop areas, and the observed texture is <br />silty loam. The site soils exhibit 'A' horizon depths of about 1.5 inches. The typical combined 'A' <br />and 'B' horizon depths range from about 6 to 7 inches. <br />Permit Revision No. 3 proposes to disturb an additional 11.0 acres, one azea located south of <br />Old Highway 133 and the other area located just east of the present mine entrance. Both areas <br />appeaz to be previously disturbed. The soils present in the proposed disturbed areas are similar to <br />the "Meadow" soil found in other areas of the mine site, as depicted on Map No. 4, "Soils.". <br />Vegetation Information - <br />Detailed vegetation information for the Bowie No. 2 permit area is presented in Section 2.04.10 <br />of the permit application document The following summary is derived from the infomration <br />presented in Section 2.04.10 of the permit document. <br />Three (3) plant communities azc present within the surface operations, facilities and surrounding <br />areas. These communities are referred to as the Juniper Woodland, Mixed Shrub and Disturbed <br />Meadow communities. <br />The Juniper Woodland community exhibits such plant species as Snowberry, Gambel oak and <br />Serviceberry. The Mixed Shrub community exhibits plant species such as Gamble Oak and <br />Serviceberry. The Meadow community is dominated by annual and noxious plant species, such <br />as bindweed, cheatgrass and Japanese brome. Alfalfa and Kentucky Bluegrass are also present. <br />10 <br />
