t
for a limited sustainable gravel operation which could lend itself well to any
restoration efforts.
This recommendation to not issue a 404 permit is based on the potential effects
to National Forest lands for the proposed dredging operation and does not refer
to the other part of the application for removal of the placer mining remains.
Our biggest concerns on the removal of the placer mining remains are: 1) the type
of access across the river and 2) that the present river channel not be
disturbed. If these concerns are addressed, removal of the placer mining remains
would not adversely affect National Forest lands and would be environmentally and
aesthetically acceptable.
We are in the process of preparing a more detailed report documenting some of the
impacts which have occurred over the past several years. This report will be
available for your use when completed.
I appreciate the opportunity to comment on this proposal. If you have any
questions please contact Steve Wells at 303-327-4261.
Sincerely,
/s/ Richard P. Cook
RICHARD P.
