' The City population increased from 9,306 in 1970 to 13,037 in
' 1980. Much of this growth was due to expansion of several
mineral and energy companies in the general area.
'
The recent recession severely restricted growth and economic
' activity within the area. Major private employers are the
Cotter Corporation, Western Forge Corporation, Pro-tec Inc.
' and Ideal Cement Co. Each was affected adversely by the
recession. This was in part counteracted by the large

government employment in the area. This includes the maximum
' security prison of the Colorado Department of Corrections,
St. Thomas Hospital and the Bureau of Land Management.
t Generally, the economy has been slow over the past two to
three years.

The potential for growth in the area is excellent, although
' dependent on general economic recovery. Unlike larger
metropolitan areas to the north, the Canon City area relies
'
on a few basic manufacturing industries, government
' employment and its historic agricultural base. These
segments of the national economy are slowly recovering.

1
1
I 1

5
