This has been especially <br />true of sub-bituminous and lignitic western coals. <br />The Maxwell coal is a higher rank, low moisture coal. <br />Typically, it would not be expected to experience problems <br />with spontaneous combustion even when stockpiled for <br />extended periods. This has been demonstrated by past <br />experience. There have been periods where stockpiles have <br />remained intact for from 12 to 18 months with no problems <br />with spontaneous combustion. <br />Proper stockpiling procedures will also reduce the risk of <br />spontaneous combustion. Coal should be place in shallow, <br />well compacted lifts. Sealing the surface of coal piles <br />expected to remain in place for extended periods will <br />minimize the risk of spontaneous combustion. <br />The Maxwell coal from the Golden Eagle mine is trucked to <br />the New Elk preparation plant. The coal is typically placed <br />in longer term stockpiles in shallow, well- compacted lifts. <br />
