STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215 C O L O RA D O
Denver, Colorado 80203 D I V 1 5 1 0 N O F
Phone: (303) 866-3567 MINERAL S

FAX: (3031 832-8706 G E O L O G Y
REC IAM ATION•NINING
SAFETY•SCIENCE
Bill Owens
TO: David Berry Governor
FROM: Sandy Brown Russell ceage
DATE: February 16, 2006 Executive Director
RE: Forfeited Mine Summary & Proposed Revegetation Sampling Ronald w. CaRany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
In an effort to prioritize revegetation sampling efforts at the forfeited mine sites I have
created the attached table. This table lists the forfeited mines, the year(s) they were
seeded and the amount of remaining bond money.
The following sites are recommended for revegetation sampling this summer:
Grassy Gap -This will be the second year of sampling. Janet Binns is the
sampling coordinator. We plan to sample the end or June or first week of July.
Twin Pines - We will initiate sampling in June. Kent Gorham is corresponding
with the landowner and leasee to gain access and to determine final pond status.
I will be the sampling coordinator. Kent and Dan M. have volunteered to help.
Last summer we sampled at OC#2 hoping the revegetation would be successful.
Revegetation on the hillslope is sparse and the final results showed the cover and
production were both below the standard. Since, there is money left we will take
measures to improve the revegetation. Dan Mathews has been corresponding with the
landowner to develop a plan to improve revegetation success on the slope. Dan Mathews
will take the lead on this site and work with the landowner, Castleton Ranch. We will
keep you updated as plans aze drafred.
The Blue Flame Mine was sampled in the summers of 2002 and 2003. The site achieved
the cover and production standards. The reclaimed site is characterized by a diverse,
permanent vegetation and would qualify for release. In May 2004 a contractor repaired
some subsidence damage above the reclaimed portal and redisturbed a small area of the
revegetation. I do not believe additional vegetation sampling is warranted at this site. I
think we can rely on the data collected previously when the site is stabilized.
The proposed sampling for the summer of 2007 will include: Twin Pines, TBM, and
Coal Gulch/Arness McGriffin.
c.
