The native vegetation has completely died out on
approximately 5 acres and the area is increasing in size.
Upon arriving at the site an attempt to take soil samples was made.
Several sample holes were dug in the affected area. On each of the holes
Lee and Nate encountered a dark red foreign substance 3-4 inches from the
surfar_e. Also encountered on each hole were noxious and possible toxir_
fumes.
The Spanish Peaks-Purgatoire River SCD requests that you investigate this
situation immediately and inform the board of any findings. We feel that
the problem stems from mining activity either air shaft construction or
sub-surface coal mining at the New Elk and Golden Eagle Mines.
Thanks for your prompt attention to this request.
Sincerely,
Stanley S. Barron, Jr.
President, SP-PR SCD
Attachment
